Top 7 Safari Packing Tips: What to Bring and What to Skip
Going on safari is a thrilling adventure, but knowing what to pack can make or break your experience. Overpacking is a common mistake, and so is forgetting the essentials that truly matter out in the bush. As a travel consultant at Rafiki Tembo Tours and Safari, I’ve guided many travelers on what works best. These are my top seven safari packing tips to help you prepare smartly, travel light, and stay comfortable on your journey.
1. Choose neutral-colored clothing
Earth tones like khaki, olive, and brown are your best bet. They help you blend into the natural surroundings and avoid attracting insects. Avoid bright colors and camouflage patterns—bright colors can startle wildlife, and camouflage is restricted in some African countries due to military associations.
2. Pack light layers
Mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially on game drives. Days heat up fast. Think lightweight, breathable layers like a long-sleeve shirt, fleece jacket, and a packable rain shell. This way, you’re ready for whatever the bush throws your way.
3. Comfortable closed shoes are key
You don’t need heavy hiking boots unless you’re doing serious trekking. For regular game drives and lodge walks, a pair of sturdy walking shoes or trail sneakers will do just fine. Make sure they’re well broken in before your trip.
4. Don’t forget sun protection
Bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. The African sun can be intense even when it’s cloudy. A lightweight scarf or buff can also help protect your neck and face from sun and dust.
5. Go minimal on toiletries
Most safari lodges provide basic toiletries, so there’s no need to pack full-sized products. Focus on essentials like travel-sized insect repellent, biodegradable wipes, and any medications you might need. Also bring a good lip balm and moisturizing lotion—the dry air can be harsh.
6. Pack a good pair of binoculars and a camera
Wildlife sightings can happen in the blink of an eye. A good pair of binoculars enhances your viewing experience, and a camera helps capture the moments you’ll never want to forget. If you’re using your phone, consider a zoom lens attachment.
7. Leave bulky extras behind
Hairdryers, hard-shell suitcases, and multiple outfit changes are best left at home. Many safaris involve light aircraft with strict luggage limits, so soft duffel bags are ideal. Lodges often offer laundry services, so you can re-wear items comfortably.
