Clear, honest answers to help you plan the right Great Migration safari across Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara.
The best time depends on the experience you want. January to March is excellent for calving around Ndutu and the southern Serengeti, while July to October is best for dramatic Mara River crossings in Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara.
Yes. A well-planned East Africa migration safari can combine Tanzania’s Serengeti with Kenya’s Maasai Mara. This is especially useful from July to October, when the herds may move between Northern Serengeti, the Mara River and the Maasai Mara.
No. River crossings are natural wildlife events and can never be guaranteed. The herds move according to rainfall, grazing conditions and instinct, so we plan your safari in the best regions for the season while keeping expectations realistic.
For a strong migration experience, we recommend 7 to 12 days. This allows time for Serengeti, Northern Serengeti or Ndutu, possible Maasai Mara extensions, and a more relaxed safari pace without rushing between regions.
Both are excellent, but they offer different experiences. Serengeti covers a much larger part of the migration cycle, including calving, central movement and Mara River crossings. Maasai Mara is especially famous for classic river-crossing scenes and dense wildlife viewing from around August to October.
Yes. A hot air balloon safari can usually be added in Serengeti or Maasai Mara, depending on the route, season and availability. It is one of the most memorable optional experiences for guests who want a special sunrise view over the plains.
Yes, the Great Migration can be excellent for families when planned with the right pacing, lodges and travel distances. We usually recommend private vehicles, child-friendly camps and enough time in each area to avoid long, rushed days.
For peak migration months, especially July to October, we recommend booking 6 to 12 months in advance. The best camps in Northern Serengeti, river-crossing areas and Maasai Mara can fill early.
